Chapter 1
In this chapter Paul introduces himself, his sister Betty and his mother. The family is on their way to their new home, and hopefully also a happier future.

Chapter 2
In the beginning of this chapter Paul tells some things about himself like:
- his father ran away when he was only 2 years old
- they were poor
- he likes to play tricks on people
- he never knew his grandfather
Then he continues his story. He tells some things about his new house, like it’s situated next to an airport and that there was an old apple tree in their backyard. His mother was very exited about their new home, and in her eyes everything was perfect. Even the cockroaches couldn’t change her mood. But Paul was afraid for roaches since he saw a African roach when he was 3 years. he even had nightmares about them! Luckily, his mother already had bought Insect Bombs, and in the meantime that the bombs did their work, the family went to the cinema to see Lassie, because his mother really adores that dog. When they got home and start looking for dead roaches, they didn’t found any! There’s had been a mistake, all the doors should have been opened, but they weren’t opened. Paul opened the door, and all the roaches jumped on him!

Chapter 3
Paul gives us some information about how his mother was able to buy their house while the where often broke. One day a cute Italian woman knocked crying on every door in their street. She had her two kids with her. The woman and the twin were abandoned by her husband and their father, who moved to Paris. Paul’s mother and the woman, who turned out to be called Connie, got along great. When Paul’s mother heard from the 800.000 dollars Connie had on her bank account, she convinced Connie to buy the house in Travis with her. Connie considered that as a good idea, and the bought the house as co-owners. Paul’s family would live upstairs and Connie and the twin downstairs. When Paul goes outside, he meets a girl from his age called Jennifer. Together they went to his neighbour, Miss Lillah, to see the water headed baby. Paul was really shocked by seeing it, Jennifer also warned him for the other boys in town, who are going to do rotten things to him, because he’s new and not Polish like everybody in the town.

Chapter 4
The big moving in started. Paul and Betty already have gotten their instructions like: never go into Connie’s rooms and hundreds of other rules. There where also : Nonna Mamie and Nonno Frankie, the grandparent from the twin Joey and Nicky. Nonna Mamie already started cleaning the downstairs kitchen and Nonno Frankie followed Paul into the backyard. He sniffed the earth, imagining what a great place it would be to grow tomatoes, eggplants, corn and all other sorts of vegetables. When he saw worms, he knew it for sure, this garden would give him the best tomatoes ever! Nonno Frankie turned out to be a very humorous person, who made jokes all the time

Chapter 5
In the beginning of the chapter Paul only tells about his mother’s history. He tells she’s a man hater, she don’t like housework, her parents were Irish and her father was a fruit an vegetables salesman, who drove down the streets, trying to track some attention by singing and dancing around the bike. When her father died, he wanted his daughter to marry, so Paul’s mother married with her love, the baker’s son. A year later Betty was born, and 2 years after the birth of Betty Paul was born just when His mom & dad were going to divorce. He also tells about the times his mother threatened to kill herself. Nonno Frankie has prepared dinner and asks Paul’s mother to come down to eat. They decide to go, and Paul noticed that the house was already decorated in one day! There was a large meal and Paul ate for the fist time fried eel.

Chapter 6
In this chapter they are still eating from the best meal Paul had ever seen. The meal was a great success. On Tuesday Paul missed Nonno Frankie, fortunately Jennifer came to ask him if he wanted to walk. He agreed, and she took him to meet his parent, who looked (comparing to Jennifer) as zombies. When Paul looked around all the parent in the town who sat on their porches, looked like zombies. After that they decided to go to Paul’s place, to hang out in the backyard. They climbed into the apple tree (perfect view), and Jennifer got emotional. She felt like she was trapped in Travis, like she had to end up as a zombie on the porch. Paul comforted her, and he said they would both escape from that terrible destiny.

Chapter 7
When Nonno Frankie arrives, he has all kind of stuff with him for the backyard. Paul introduces Jennifer to everyone, and Nonno Frankie and she can really get along together. Jennifer takes Paul to meet his black neighbours, who he likes right away cause the remind him at himself. When they return to Pauls house, Nonno Frankie suggests to catch killies and crabs. And so, Jennifer, Paul, Joey & Nicky and Nonno Frankie go to the river to catch them. That evening they eat (including Jennifer) a wonderful meal. Paul’s mother talks constantly about the dog they might get.

Chapter 8
They now have 4 dogs. Paul’s mother works for the ASPCA, that’s a society to protect animals. Connie has a boyfriend, a butcher who’s nickname is ‘ chops’ Jennifer and Paul have become best friend and they sit every day in the apple tree talking about all kinds of stuff. Jennifer also tells Paul a lot about his future classmates

Chapter 9
Paul goes to school, and is really nervous about it. His mother now tries to have the dogs get puppies. When in sport class, Paul has a misunderstanding and hits a boy in the face with his bat. This boy is very angry (naturally, who wouldn’t be?!) and whispers in Paul’s ear that he wants to fight with him, to get his revenge…

Chapter 10
That weekend, Paul is terrified of the fight that he will have on Monday, so he asks Nonno Frankie for help. Nonno Frankie teaches him the Sicilian way to fight (that means screaming and then kick him at the chins). Monday after school, almost 300 children are standing in a circle, waiting for the fight to begin. Unfortunately, Paul loses the fight, but his sister zips into action and defends her brother from any further harm.

Chapter 11
Paul’s mother succeeded and has gotten puppies now. However, nobody wants to buy them. But there are also other terrible things happened. One of the dogs, Lady, didn’t recognised Betty when she walked downstairs, and bit her in her leg. Lady was put into sleep. After the funeral of the dog Betty get a terrible flu, and Paul and his mother didn’t thought she was going to make it. But they were wrong, and Betty was completely recovered after a few weeks. Paul was happy at school now.

Chapter 12
De water headed baby from miss Lillah died. That was a terrible thing of course, but everyone expected that to happen. The teacher Paul really liked, his English teacher Miss Kolan, got a severe nervous breakdown, and quitted with her job.

Chapter 13
Paul has a lot of friends now, and is really happy now in Travis. Also in school Paul was doing fine. He even gets a A+ (10) for his presentation about trees. All of the sudden, the happiness ends. Paul’s mother and Connie have a terrible fight, because Connie told Betty things about sex (Paul’s mother is a sex-and manhater, and doesn’t want Betty to know a thing about it) His mother again threatened to kill herself.
Meanwhile, one of Paul’s jealous classmates killed the apple tree.

Chapter 14
Because of the fight, Paul is going to move again. Connie is also going to marry Chops, something Paul’s mother isn’t so happy with either. The dogs are all being given away, because they didn’t sell at all. Just before they left, Paul talks for the last time at Nonno Frankie, who teaches him to ask himself questions, that’s also when Paul hears that he will become a writer. The, the family is on their way to their new home, and hopefully also a happier future…
